Review of ccNSO Supporting Organisation

Background

As set forth in Article IX of the Bylaws, the Country-Code Names Supporting Organization (ccNSO) is responsible for developing and recommending to the Board global policies relating to country-code top-level domains (ccTLDs); nurturing consensus across the ccNSO's community, including the name-related activities of ccTLDs; and coordinating with other ICANN Supporting Organizations, committees, and constituencies under ICANN.

The ccNSO may also engage in other activities authorized by its members. Such voluntary activities may include seeking to develop voluntary best practices for ccTLD managers, assisting in skills building within the global community of ccTLD managers, and enhancing operational and technical cooperation among ccTLD managers.

The ccNSO consists of (i) ccTLD managers that have agreed to be members of the ccNSO and (ii) a ccNSO Council responsible for managing the policy-development process of the ccNSO. The ccNSO Council is responsible for filling 2 of the seats on ICANN’s Board of Directors.

For more information about the ccNSO, see http://ccnso.icann.org/.

Update

The Review is expected to be launched in July 2008.

Next Steps

Staff will seek ccNSO input on developing draft Terms of Reference (TOR). The Board Governance Committee will consider the draft TOR. It will then forward them to the Board for concurrence and, if approved, posting for public comment. This step will be followed by publication of the final TOR and the Request for Proposals for an independent reviewer.
